CONTEXT
In Costa Rica there are 45,870 livestock farms spread across the country, covering 35 per cent of the national territory. The livestock production system in the country in base on grazing, the average farm measures 40.7 ha and has a stocking rate of 0.9 AU5/ha. Of the total area, 5 per cent exists as silvopastoral, and 24 per cent is dedicated to the protection of forests.
PROJECT
The primary purpose project was to further the development of an efficient and effective livestock Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) for Costa Rica to contribute to the wider country goal of carbon neutrality while enabling continued productivity of the livestock sector. The project included to size and identify investment strategies for the different low-carbon solutions.
The work comprises a technical review of the proposed NAMA, a review of the proposed MRV activities associated with the NAMA, and an economic and financial assessment of the NAMA and MRV implementation plans.
OUTCOME
BASE and partners completed a comprehensive technical review of the MRV arrangements for the Livestock NAMA. This would be compiled into a technical report. MRV includes three distinct elements – measurement, reporting and verification – all three elements are considered and addressed.
