CONTEXT

The Alliance in energy and environment with the Andean region (AEA) Program aims to contribute to the promotion, development and consolidation of business wp-contentroach to sustainable energy solutions for rural markets and periurban. A simple input to achieve this is the elaboration of a note of incidence that analyses roles and opportunities of the contribution of the financial sector to achieve this objective, covering the four countries of the AEA Program.

Starting from a brief context and presentation of the rural market and its actors, no only from the energy sector but more broadly, the note will present and analyse case studies of policies and actions of the financial sector that have allowed leverage the creation of supply and materialise its relationship with demand. In this scenario, the importance of enriching decision-making has been determined on multisectoral public policies that can establish conditions favourable to develop business initiatives and expand their opportunities financing.

PROJECT

The project aimed to develop four directories of traditional and non-traditional financing actors, products and services, mainly focused on the financial needs of end-users and suppliers (ventures) that market and develop sustainable energy solutions in rural Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

OUTCOME

BASE issued the four directories for each of the countries. The directories included a presentation of the financing situation in rural areas, analysing the current contribution and potential of the financial sector to the energy efficiency and renewable energy market and clear identification of the actors (financial institutions, public actors, associations and private entities).

As well, BASE developed good practices including lessons learned, policies and regulations available to support the sector business models and generic institutional management actions that have allowed the mobilisation of supply and stimulate the demand for sustainable energy solutions in rural areas.
