CONTEXT

The range in agricultural systems is complex and diverse. These systems range from small basic subsistence farmers who grow food for self-consumption, to large farmers who use their products for commercialisation. However, all these systems are energy dependent. For example, the use of human and animal traction is common in small-scale operations, but increasingly the use of fossil energy is replacing in regions where they are relatively cheap.

ANALYSIS

The aim of this analysis study was to define the sectors with the greatest potential for the application of technologies focused on energy efficiency and renewable energies in Colombian agriculture to design the most suitable financial mechanisms for the Fund for the Financing of the Agricultural Sector (Finagro) target market.

The feasibility analysis studied the evaluation of the trends of the Finagro portfolio, where the main sectors in the portfolio were identified. This analysis allowed to review the detail of the most relevant subsectors within the main economic classifications. In addition, within each of these subsectors the proportion of fixed assets within each category was also identified, important information to identify the sectors with the greatest renewal of equipment. And lastly, the general consumption of the agricultural sector in Colombia was also examined, where we could have an estimate of the different use of energy for the production of different products derived from agricultural activity.

OUTCOME

BASE issued a report that presents the subsector of the agriculture sector and the technologies with the highest potential to be implemented and designed a financial mechanism for Finagro.

The technologies of boilers, cold chambers, biomass furnaces, electric motors and highly efficient pumping systems have a high application potential. And according to the evaluation, the sector with the highest priority is the milk production sector, followed by the meat chain in third place is the production of coffee.
